How To Insert A Thin Space In Microsoft Word 2016 For Mac

In typography, a thin space is a space character that is usually 15 or 16 of an em in width. It is used to add a narrow space, such as between nested quotation marks or to separate glyphs that interfere with one another. It is not as narrow as the hair space. It is also used in the International System of Units and in many countries as a thousands separator when writing numbers in groups of three digits, in order to facilitate reading.[1]

In Unicode, thin space is encoded at U+2009THIN SPACE (HTML  · ,  ). Unicode's U+202FNARROW NO-BREAK SPACE (HTML  ) is a non-breaking space with a width similar to that of the thin space.

In LaTeX and Plain TeX, thinspace produces a narrow, non-breaking space.[2][3] Inside and outside of math formulae in LaTeX, , also produces a narrow, non-breaking space.

In some versions of Microsoft Word, the symbol dialog (often available via Insert > Symbol or Insert > Special Characters), has both the thin space and the narrow no-break space available for point-and-click insertion. In Word's Symbol dialog, under font = '(normal text)', they are found in subset = 'General Punctuation', Unicode character 2009 and nearby. Other word processing programs have ways of producing a thin space.

Word proposes a very simple way to add horizontal lines to a document, but if you would like to remove these lines, this wouldn't be so obvious. Use the Style Inspector With all the different kinds of formatting that Word offers, you may sometimes find it hard to see exactly what formatting is applied to particular characters or a paragraph.

Using the AutoFormat feature in Microsoft Word, you can create both an Em dash () and En dash () automatically by typing hyphens. Alternatively, you can insert these special characters using the Insert Symbol menu. You can also copy and paste the dashes from another document, such as a web page, into your Word document.

Tip

If AutoFormat is not enabled in your copy of Microsoft Word, see: How to enable and disable Microsoft Word AutoFormat feature.

Insert an Em dash using AutoFormat

If you do the following, AutoFormat will insert an Em dash () as you type.

In a Word document:

  1. Type a word, with no space after it.
  2. Type two hyphens, with no space between or after them.
  3. Type another word.
  4. Type a space.

For example, typing:

Something--Something(space)

Will automatically format the line as:

Something—Something

When you press the spacebar after typing the example text above.

Insert an En dash using AutoFormat

If you do the following, AutoFormat will insert an En dash () as you type.

In a Word document:

  1. Type a word, with a space after it.
  2. Type a single hyphen, with a space after it.
  3. Type another word.
  4. Type a space.

For example, typing:

1993(space)-(space)1995(space)

Automatically format the line to:

1993 – 1995

When you press the spacebar after typing the example text above.
